Filming Season of Osprey I filmed Season of Osprey from April 2009 thru September 2009. I learned about a pair of Osprey
nesting near my home so I went to check it out. I came upon their nest on a cold and windy day and observed one Osprey near
the nest. I returned a few days later and caught the pair mating and preparing their nest for the season. It was
a very educational experience to learn how these raptors raise their young in just a couple of months to survive on their
own and be strong enough to undertake their first migration. Other than the day where I witnessed one of the chicks get electrocuted, the whole experience
was so rewarding. I am pleased to donate the use of the film to Lowry Nature
Center for their educational Osprey program. Cheryl Spatenka

History of Ospreys in Minnesota Before 1900, Ospreys
nested in the Twin Cities area. In the early 1900's, soon after northern European settlement, however, the birds disappeared
from the southern half of the state, primarily as the result of human impact (persecution, loss of habitat, and DDT) In 1984, Three Rivers Park District started the Twin Cities Osprey Reintroduction Project with the goal of returning the
birds as a nesting species to the 8 county metro area. The program has been very successful with over 60 active Osprey
nests currently in the twin cities area and a growing number in Southern Minnesota!
